Committee Minutes
Regular Meeting
February 27th, 2007

7:00 PM

Attending Members: Mike Harnad, Joseph Colangelo, Ed Taiman and Mike Pinatti.   John Sahi, Ginger Reinhart, and Pat Pinney were also in attendance.
Meeting called to order at 7:10 PM.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes from the previous WRC meeting were reviewed.  Mike Harnad made a motion to accept the minutes without changes, which was seconded by Joseph Colangelo.  All members were unanimous in approval.

GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Pat Pinney and Ginger Reinhart were invited by Ed Taiman to discuss the possibility of a Willington Arts Council.  Program development was discussed including pottery classes, concerts, and summer plays.  The hope is to include more citizens in Recreational Programs other than sports programs.  The old Senior Center in the Town Office Building could be a meeting area for these functions.  Ed Taiman will pursue this idea further and report to the WRC.
(Greg Suchy arrives @ 7:32pm)

DIRECTORS REPORT:
·       John Sahi reported that the UCONN State Indoor Archery tournament was sponsored by Willington Recreation and included over [60] shooters.
·       A recent ski trip to Wachussett included about [20] people.
·       Greg Suchy will be coaching a travel basketball team for 5th and 6th grade boys.
·       The boating course is scheduled.
·       Fencing classes are scheduled to start.
·       Summer camp will be under the Recreation Department this year.

OLD BUSINESS:
A.      Karl Asimovic submitted a footprint of the RRAC to Planning and Zoning with “phases” included.  The P&Z Committee accepted the print with the only addition being insertion of the split rail fence location on the final draft.  Greg Suchy suggested a sub committee be formed to oversee the building of the RRAC.
B.      The 06-07 basketball season was considered successful.  John Sahi will send an email to this season coaches for player evaluation.  John will also speak to the Recreation Director in Mansfield about referees for next season.  It was suggested that next year a Willington vs. Mansfield All Star tournament may be added to the basketball program.  The WRC members discussed adding Ashford to the travel schedule to promote more games and more teams in each age bracket.  There will be discussion with the Mansfield coaches and Recreation Department to help create a constant style of play consistent in both towns.  Mike Harnad will add these new “rules” to his living document for Recreational Basketball.

NEW BUSINESS:
A.      Discussion of Summer Camp will be held until next meeting.
B.      A formal meeting must be held with the Town Selectmen to discuss a solution for maintaining the sports fields on a regular basis.  A possible cooperative effort between Public Works and the Recreation Department would be a positive solution.  This could alleviate the workload for Public Works, while providing more regular mowing and general upkeep of the fields.

ADJOURNMENT:
Mike Harnad motioned to adjourn, which was seconded by Ed Taiman.  The meeting adjourned at 8:45PM.  The next meeting is scheduled for March 27th, 2007 at 7:00PM at the Town Hall Office Building.

Respectfully submitted 3/12/07
